Plasma surface treatment -
Vacuum plasmas are a wonderfully complex soup of many reactive particles such as free radicals, metastables, ions, electrons and photons (UV and visible). This high energy soup accelerates existing chemical reactions and promotes new ones. The use of vacuum is also an advantage because many reaction products that would otherwise contaminate the surface (particularly when treating organic materials), are volatile and are pumped away leaving a clean treated surface. Although the energies in the plasma are very high, the heat load is very low making it a room temperature process and enabling plasma treatment of thermally sensitive materials.
Vacuum plasma treatment has applications in many fields. Among other things it can be used for :-
